Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, New Hampshire's first female governor is now New Hampshire's first female US Senator. She came out the winner in a hard fought contest against Republican incumbent John Sununu. Her campaign attracted interest and support from across the country.
She took a strong stand in favor of embryonic stem cell research calling for increased levels of Federal research spending. She said that the Bush administration has sought to diminish scientific research and development during the last eight years and called for a new direction.
Parkinson's sufferer and leading advocate Michael J. Fox campaigned with her in September of 2008 calling to remove ideology and politics from science. Senator-elect Shaheen's 10 year old daughter has juvenile diabetes.
